THOUSANDS OF FLAGS PAY RESPECT AT THE 57TH ANNUAL HEALING FIELDS

Tempe, Arizona - The City of Tempe and the Valley of the Sun Exchange Clubs Foundation are pleased to host the 7th Annual 9/11 Memorial Healing Field. Join our community leaders, neighbors, and valley citizens September 11th through the 14th at Tempe Beach Park to pay tribute the men, women and children who lost their lives, all those who sacrificed their lives, and the heroes that responded to 9/11.

Volunteers will install nearly 3,000 American Flags on 8’ poles in a touching display, each commemorating a victim of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Each flag will be personalized with a photo, and biography of the fallen victims. The display of flags will provide a backdrop for several events going on throughout the weekend.

On Thursday, September 11th a brief commemoration, including a reading of the names of the first responders who died on September 11, 2001, will be held at 5:40 am. Later on at 7pm, hundreds will come hold candles and walk among the flags for the Candlelight Vigil with music, prayer and guest speakers as they pay respect to the victims.

The Healing Fields is free and open to the public at Tempe Beach Park, on the Northwest corner of Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway. United Blood Services will host community blood drives on Thursday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm, in hopes to collect 411 pints of blood in remembrance of the emergency responders who lost their lives on the tragic day.

Amp Walk 2008, a new event, will be Saturday, Sept. 13th. Registration is at 7:30am and the walk will begin at 8am at Tempe Beach Park. The walk has been designed to raise community awareness and support for amputees nationwide. It is a free event open to the public and is sponsored by Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics.
